"OLD" A.W. Clark Jr. High Reunion Plans

I received notice of a reunion for A. W. Clark Jr. High. I know most of the readers of this alumni webpage think of Clark Jr. High as one of the TWO junior highs, the other one being Rosemont. But, at one time, there was only ONE junior high in the La Crescenta area. I started AW Clark Jr. High as a 7th grader in 1957 and graduated in June of 1960. Over that summer, Clark Jr. High was transformed into Crescenta Valley High School. Those of us who had graduated from Clark in 1959 ended up going to that same school from the fall of 1957 to June of 1963, SIX school years in one set of buildings.

We've had a lot of high school reunions, but there has formed a group who wants to celebrate all those who went to the Old Clark Jr. High School. Until the fall of 1960, graduates of Clark either went to Glendale High School or Hoover High School for their high school years. They're invited to this reunion too. There was a reunion last year, I believe, and there are plans for another one soon, since not as many people heard about the reunion last year. The .pdf attachment will give you all the details we have so far.

James Adams

Bradbury, CA
Maritial Status: Married (38 years in October)
Spouse Name: Marisela Cortez (Lincoln High, L.A. class of '63)
Children: a son now 37 and a daughter now 33. Alson four grandchildren.
Occupation: Financial Advisor and Financial Planning Specialist for Smith Barney.
Comments: I worked for ARCO for 32 years - joined up right after college. Left ARCO after BP bought us. I had already become an Enrolled Agent (Enrolled to practice before the IRS - it means I can charge a lot for doing your taxes) and had completed the education requirements for Certified Financial Planner, so I passed the CFP exam and became a Financial Adviser and Financial Planning Specialist (what used to be called a stock broker) with Smith Barney. Marisela and I live in Bradbury, CA, just east of Pasadena. We have a bucolic home on 2 acres and frequently see deer, bears, bobcats, foxes, hawks, turkey buzzards - beasts you don't normally see so close to LA. We love it here, and the grandsons love to come and harass the lizards. I took up flying in 1984 and we own a Piper Turbo Lance, a six-seater similar to what John Kennedy planted in the ocean, that we use for vacations and I use to visit my outlying clients - from San Diego to Yakima. We both love flying places in our plane and have had some fantastic trips - Quebec, Charleston, Washington DC, New Orleans (before Katrina), Alaska, Calgary and lots more. [March 31, 2007]

Daily School Day TRIVIA blog:
Eugene, OR 97402 and Florence, OR 97439
Marital Status: Married
Wife: Stephanie Ames
Children: Colin and Lafcadio, born in the 1970s
Occupation: High School Teacher (chemistry, physics, geology, history, foreign languages, photography, computers, calligraphy] at times at Pleasant Hill High School since 1970 and formerly adjunct instructor at Marylhurst University, author (8 books, all non-fiction), and District Webmaster (
Pleasant Hill School District). My wife is a landscape/bird photographer, selling her work in galleries along the Oregon Coast. She sells VERY well. I got lucky in marrying her. I finally took Social Security at 70 last spring, so we're doing O.K.
Reunion Message: I teach in a small high school in rural Oregon and have a summer/weekend place on the Oregon Coast. I look out of my classroom window at the orchards, mountains, blue skies or gentle rain, and go back to doing a profession I truly love. Of course, at night, I put up pictures and entries for the CVHS webpages, just to fill the void ;-)
Comments: I am semi-retired now, teaching only two classes a day, so I'm only at school from 7:45 to 1:00, instead of 7:30 to 5:00. I volunteer time helping teachers and students with computers, digitial movies, and anything else. By the way, I have to show my driver's license to get senior discounts. The wrinkles just haven't happened yet. That's what comes from having a grandfather from Edinburgh who married a girl from London, giving me WHITE skin, that has only one other color, red. So, sunscreen has been my friend for the last three decades, AND living in cloudy western Oregon. But I can probably make Vitamin D from flourescent lighting alone. [May 29, 2016]

1039 Justin Avenue, #102
Glendale. CA 91201
Marital Status: Single
Children: no
Occupation: Technical Manager for Electronic Data Systems (EDS)
Comments: As you can see, I've returned home to Glendale after spending almost 25 years in San Francisco. My partner and I separated after five years so I decided to return to my roots and the many friends with whom I maintained contact. It took me a little while to get used to the changes that took place; e.g., the buildup of downtown Glendale and the changes in demographics. I still work for EDS and am working out of the Bank of America building on Brand Blvd. near the 134 freeway. Larry Caldwell and his partner, Lin, are still in Oregon. Jeff Hughes was home during the summer to attend the memorial service for his father who passed away and then came back again during the first part of November. His family is working on getting him back to the States. I've been singing with Miss Nute and the Alumni Chorale for the past year and am thoroughly enjoying the experience. She's still the same inimitable person she was when I first sang under her direction. Teri and I had lunch prior to the holidays with Claudia Noceti. Her father lives in the area and she comes down periodically to help him deal with the administrative details of his life. As she says, he's an artist and needs help staying on top of his paperwork. I completed a voice over class last year and am now in the process of sending out demos in hopes that I'll land a gig. Thought it would be a great way to stay active in my retirement and supplement my income during my "golden years". [February 1, 2008]

Jim Austin

I wanted to pass on that we got a call from Tim [McDonald] a while ago and Jim Austin passed away this afternoon, [February 21, 2010]. We saw him just 2 weeks ago today, and he was still fighting his battle with cancer, but went on hospice a few days later as he was too weak to have any further chemo treatments. It was in his liver, pancreas and bones. Too young to die, but free from suffering now.

Since I am no longer with Mike Strom, I moved back to Ventura,CA. I am now living near both my sons and enjoying being a part of their lives after being so far from them. I've also returned to teaching as a substitute teacher for the intermediate and high schools here in Ventura. [September 29, 2005]

Sorry to hear of Sherry's passing. She was a very active and energetic lady. We dated a few times at San Diego State and I know she loved her physical education classes. Later, I would see her at the Glendale YMCA when she was sending Jason off the Camp Fox for a few weeks in the summer

So sad but I hope she had good times with Jason in Bali. We need to stay close to our friends.

Really sorry to hear about her passing as we had been communicating on Facebook over past several month. Very pretty young girl and a very nice lady. Though she didn't mention i'll health, I had been concerned because of pictures I saw. It was fun "chatting" with her while she was living in Indonesia and she seemed like she had a good handle on life there at her son's home. Best to Shari's family.

Mike Carey
409 Beryl Cove Way
Seal Beach, CA 90740
Marital Status: Divorced/Remarried
Spouse Name: Dee
Children: Tricia Carey Dalton 9-24-1978
Occupation: Retired - City Clerk, for the City of Los Angeles
Comments: Attended Occidental College and graduated in 1967. Married Diana Nunn (1963) in my senior year. I worked for the City of Los Angeles as a pool manager at Griffith Park while attending Occidental. I then went to work for the Personnel Department of the City in February 1968. Got drafted in April 1968 and spent 2 years as a sergeant in charge of patient pay at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. (when it was an excellent facility for people severely wounded in Vietnam - apparently now it has deteriorated). I returned to the City in 1970 and spent 34 years working for the City. I went to law school on the GI Bill and graduated from Southwestern Law School in June 1976 and passed the California Bar Exam in the summer of 1976. While with the City, I worked for the Personnel Department, the City Administrative Officer, the City Attorney, the Chief Legislative Analyst, and the City Clerk. Mayor Riordan appointed me City Clerk in 1997 and I retired in 2004. The City was a good employer, but I was too close to the full time elected officials and became quite the cynic. Diana and I had a baby girl in 1978 - Tricia. Although Diana and I got divorced in 1984, we always shared parenting duties and conspired against Tricia, remaining good friends to this day. Tricia graduated from UCSB in 2000 and now works for the City (the 4th generation to do that - my grandfather worked as an engineer after graduating from Occidental and my father worked for the Department of Water and Power after WW II). I am now a grandfather with the arrival of Paige Carey Dalton in May 2008. I have her 2 to 4 days a week, which is exhausting. When Tricia was born, Diana took a 2 year leave from teaching so I missed all the feeding, diaper changing, etc. because I was at work. It is now payback time with my grandaughter. It is hell getting old. I had a hip replaced in 2002. As I tell people, I can remember vivid details of junior high and high school, but cannot remember what I did last week. And of course, the older I get the better I was. Look forward to seeing all! of you at our next reunion.

Stan Cholewinski

Stan graduated from USC in January of 1970, married Mitzi Lewison in June of that same year. They lived in Belmont Shores, CA but had separated at the time of his death. They had no children. Stan died of a heart attack while jogging on
January 5, 1990.
Stan's last job was with the USC County Health Center in research and interaction of different drugs and medications. He had done similar type work prior to USC for the county but was fortunate to get that job because he didn't have a Dr. degree. He was working on his Masters but had not completed it. He was a great runner and had run in the LA marathon and completed it three different times. He had not been in the best of health though for a while, even though he was careful of his diet and always did a lot of exercise and never gained weight. He may have weighed around 170. In college and High School he had been much heavier. Stan was always into vitamins and health even in junior high. Told he had two health problems in junior high and high school, he did a lot of research into figuring out how to manage his health and live his life to the fullest. Stan's mother, Mrs. Harry Chamberlain (Willie), can be reached at, if you have reminiscences to share.

...Robert was born on August 1, 1944 at Glendale Adventist Hospital in Glendale, California. His parents were James Arthur and Mabel Alice Ellis. Robert was raised in Montrose, California. He was brought up to be self-confident and dependable. These were traits that would serve him well throughout his life.
...As a young child, Robert was never someone who needed to be the center of attention. He wasn't pushy and never forced his way into games or other activities. Robert developed a variety of interests, though, and the things he enjoyed doing he did well. He was always curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. Robert took part in cross-country running. In his spare time he liked fixing electronics, amateur radio, gardening and trains. However, what Robert enjoyed most was simply playing and spending time with his many friends.
....Compassionate and devoted to Sharon, Robert held endearing, traditional values about marriage and family life. He took the responsibility of marriage to heart, giving it his total commitment. He was a source of strength to Sharon and using his gifts at nurturing one-on-one relationships, he worked hard to make his new family happy.
...Robert brought the same traditional values in his marriage to bear on how he raised his children. He was a good parent to them, always firm yet fair in his dealings. He would always listen carefully and think things through before he acted, even when it was an adverse situation. Robert was also a walking schedule, always seeming to know what everyone in the family needed to do, where they needed to be and when they needed to be there. Robert was blessed with three children, two sons, Nicholas and Christopher, and one daughter, Michelle. They were also blessed with three grandchildren, Skylar, Kayleigh, and Jacob.
...Robert liked to experience things first-hand as well as learn about them. This trait carried over into his hobbies, where he was very methodical in how he organized his activities and categorized things. Since he enjoyed his private time, Robert always tried to allocate a specific time for working on his hobbies. His favorite pursuits were household projects, fixing anything, building projects such as a fireplace with Chris, radio, and car work. Robert was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others.
...Robert Jae Ellis passed away on July 12, 2014 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center in Pomona, California. He is survived by loving wife, Sharon; sons, Nick and Chris; daughter, Michelle; and grandchildren, Skylar, Kayleigh, and Jacob. Services were held at Live Oak Memorial Park & Mortuary. Robert was laid to rest in Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia, California.
...Commitment is a key word that can be used to describe the life of Robert Jae Ellis. He was committed to living the life of a good man who was both practical and trustworthy. He was committed to the traditional values that he upheld his entire life. He committed himself to being a hard worker who expected the same effort in return from those around him. Most of all, he was committed to those he knew and loved.

Dianne Gira

Dianne will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Frank Rizzo, who went to St. Francis High School but was close friends with many CV kids, told me that Diannne was killed in a car accident some years ago. He did not know when or any other details. Curt Groniga remembers: "Diane Gira was a faculty member with a PhD in Economics at Cal State Dominguez Hills when I was an Asst Dean there in the 70s. I believe she must have died around 77 or 78. Odd coincidence was that Stan Cholewinski was working on his Master's Degree there at about the same time."

From Mary LeBlanc, "Dianne was born 12/26/45 and was married to Larry Cabaldon at the 10-year reunion and 'Dianne Marie Cabaldon' was on her death certificate dated April 15, 1978" [updated by Mary on 4/1/02]

Occupation: I've been an explorer, physician, photographer, photojournalist as well as dabbling in numerous other endeavors (archaeology, antiquities, blah blah) which have kept my mind and body occupied...indeed, it's wonderful to just be alive, admire the flowers and still be intoxicated with the smell....
Comments: How amazing to find the CVHS alumni page while just idling a few moments on the computer... I certainly have a cascade of memories spinning round my noggin of the run from Monte Vista to CVHS, but not really sure how it's relevant to my current life...too bad we have less than 20% on board and I eventually will get some info in but right now I'm content to run a splurb in your direction...9 yrs in univ system and 7 yrs in Asia, not to mention a here and there and everywhere else on this world. Have put so much distance between the present and the past...but I'm a very happy camper indeed and share your enjoyment of nature and particularly wilderness experiences...

We lived for three years in Vallejo, Calif and then moved to Nova Scotia - five years later returned for a two year stint in L.A. and now have been in Nova Scotia since 1983. We have raised a large family of five daughters and two sons and are loving our 7 grandchildren . My engineering career has allowed me to work on a variety of projects - a four year job on the Confederation Bridge which now connects the Island province of Prince Edward Island to the mainland of Canada - the 2nd largest bridge of its type in the world, wharf projects in the Caribbean, Quality Control work for Diving Companies, and the list goes on and on - now currently working on Liquified Natural Gas Facilities in Nova Scotia, but always with the thought of moving back stateside - 3 of our daughters live in the state of Utah with 6 of our 7 grandchildren. Our whole family are active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) and that has made all the difference in our lives. Julie and I are Temple Workers in the Halifax Temple of our church and that brings us great happiness. I still love to sing as I did at CV and have fond memories of those days at Crescenta Valley High. Love to hear from fellow classmates via email or whatever.

Reunion: Comments: Shirley and I moved back to California from Georgia in December 2001. We purchase our home in Murrieta, CA. I haven`t yet "hung up my spikes" and continue to do consulting from home....although the hours I spend working are diminishing. On the personal side, I am the President of our homeowner`s association here in Murrieta, and that allows me to see a side of people I`d rather not see. I play tennis 3-4 times/week and work out the other days. I had to give up running a couple of years ago because of plantar fascitis in my right heel. I`m an avid hockey fan...go Kings, and will watch a hockey game whenever I can. Shirley and I travel a fair amount and we enjoy cruises with our neighbor friends. We have 2 grandchildren in San Clemente (from our oldest son) and our youngest son just moved to Austin, TX after living in Boulder, CO for past 11 years. Shirley and I will celebrate 42 years next May....ugh! We don`t see any of our CV classmates,! although Larry Koch and his wife spent time with us here in Murrieta in November 2004. I also spoke to Barry Koch during that period. Shirley and I did meet Randy Sims in Dallas a few years ago, and we do get a Xmas card from Jim Stembridge every year. I hope all are enjoying this phase of your life and in good health. Shirley and I would like to hear from any of you, and if you`re in the Murrieta area stop by. Steve Hoagland

It is with great sadness that I relay information about the passing of Steve Hoagland yesterday, 2/10/06. I met him and his wife for lunch in Ventura yesterday while on a trip up the coast. After lunch we were talking in the parking lot when he said he was feeling dizzy. Valiant efforts by nearby people with CPR certifications and the Ventura Fire Department were unsuccessful. Steve was a very good, long time friend to me, along with several others. He will be missed very much. Services are tentatively set for next Saturday, but I don't have a time or location yet. Any who are interested in times may send me an e-mail and I will respond as soon as I know the details. Richard Lewis

Steve Hoagland was born on January 9, 1945. He died on February 10, 2007. Steve remarked to me the week prior to his death that all that he had planned to do in his life had turned out the way he hoped. He was always helpful, kind, and accepting of others' opinions. He is survived by his wife Ann, sister, Elaine, and his mother. Steve spent his life teaching others and retired from his high school teaching position in Ventura California. After retirement he and his wife spent their retirement traveling and enjoying life. Steve will be remembered by all those that knew him. A good friend who will be missed. -- Dennis and Mary (MacArthur) LeBlanc

Reunion: Sorry I can't be part of the 45th reunion in La Crescenta -- we would have to cancel long-made travel plans to Turkey and Greece. Hope to see some good photos, though.
Comments: We are finally completing our Tucson, AZ winter home and really enjoy friends visiting for a few days. (520) 576-4551. Had a fun visit from Dennis and Mary LeBlanc in March. They spent several different overnights with us in Anchorage last summer during their 3-month(!) Alaska sojourn, and they showed us the beautiful CA coastline around their home last fall when we came through on our annual AK-AZ trip. [August 9, 2008]

Marital Status: widowed/remarried
Spouse Name: Lynda

Occupation: Motorcoach Operator at Pacific Coast Sightseeing, Anaheim, CA
Comments: Retirement is now here and instead of driving for a living, I'm going to live by driving. We plan on hitching up the trailer and seeing the country. I've learned that many of our classmates have an RV of some sort. Perhaps there could be some informal get-togethers or reunions in a variety of RV parks here and there. Even with the higher costs of gas/diesel, the RV way of travel is still very affordable. [February 6, 2009]

Occupation: I'm working for IBM in Denver, CO. My job title is Senior Software Engineer, but my actual job is writing training material for the computer classes we teach. I don't get much chance to travel for work, but do manage a couple of scuba diving trips a year for playtime. It's hard to belive it's been 45 years. I still think back on my CV years, friends, and teachers with great fondness, and wish the best to everyone. [February 3, 2008]
