that Richard had passed away a few years ago, according to a
conversation with his younger brother. Can anyone supply
more details?

"Rick" Machtolf from our class is my cousin. He passed away
7 Jun 2005 in Boulder Co., CO after fighting cancer for
several years. He left Kay, his loving wife of nearly 40
years, 2 children and 5 grandchildren, plus his 2 brothers,
Larry and Keith. He served in Vietnam as an Aircraft

Comments: After living in So. Ca. all those years, Dodi and
I moved to the NW with our kids in 1978. We felt there was a
much better place to raise kids than the asphalt of So. Ca.
I went to work for Sears Industrail Sales (transfered from
retail)and Dodi has worked for the State of Wa. After a 31
year career, I retired on March 31, 2000. We are in the
process of building a new home in Chehalis, about 30 miles
south of Olympia. We own a 5 acre lot and hope to start
construction in about a month. Dodi is talking about working
for another two years or so.
The kids are all doing well. David is in his 14th year in
the Air Force and is still single. Jean is a program manager
at Microsoft amd is married to Steve Ross. Jason is in
Theatre and is married to Debra Lund. (No grandkids)

Reunion: Un-believable, 40 years since we were all together.
Went in the service at 17, and the next 40 years, ups and
downs, probably for most of us. But I wll have to admit, I
came out the other end, fairly rosey. Most of the kids
turned out great: one a minister, one in business for
herself, one an airline stewardess, another son in business
for himself, one son learning life, and the last son "who
knows". First marriage should never have happened; thank God
for second chances. Spent 37+ years with the government,
retired as Finance Manager. Enjoy golfing (way too much,
according to my wife) and volunteer work with handicapped
children. I am waiting for the day my wife retires (also
from the government) so we can travel quite extensively, US
and abroad.

Pete Mitchell
Peter died on August 18, 1972
After graduating first in our class from
CVHS, Peter did his undergraduate work at Pomona College,
graduating with highest honors. He then went on to do
graduate work in comparative literature at Yale University.
Since Peter enjoyed the "good life," he left Yale after one
year and entered into Law School at UCLA thinking that the
law profession would provide him with the wherewithal to
achieve the "good life." He was in the process of studying
for the Bar Exam when he became ill. His death came very
quickly as he was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma. He moved to
San Francisco to be with his parents during his final days.
I was able to see him shortly before his death. Even in
dying, he maintained his sense of humor and wonder of all
that life had to offer.
His sister, Patty (class of '65), lives in Pasadena near
their mother who just celebrated her 85th birthday. Teri
Grove Rice and I often think about him and wonder what
course his life would have taken had he lived. We both agree
that his intelligence, grace and wit would have made him
successful in whatever area of endeavor he chose to pursue.
Even today, his spirit lives on in Teri's and my minds and
hearts. We are better people for having known him. -

will join them in July. They live in Indi, so we only see

God for His faithfulness over the years, living in several
foreign countries, making it through many physical
challenges and surgeries, and too much more to put in a
brief update! But I have a wonderful husband, Bill, of 40

Charles W. Nickell
Charles W. Nickell passed away at Kaiser
Permanente Hospital in Santa Clara on February 5 after a
brief but valiant battle with cancer.
Charlie was born in Glendale, California
on August 20, 1945. He raised his family in La Crescenta and
practiced law for many years in Los Angeles, including his
own private practice as well as positions with the District
Attorney and Office of County Counsel. After retiring from
Los Angeles County, he later worked for the Offices of
County Counsel in San Diego and Santa Clara counties.
Charlie possessed a great deal of expertise in juvenile
dependency law and his colleagues often sought his advice
and consultation.
As a teenager, Charlie received his
pilot's license and enjoyed flying single-engine airplanes
as his hobby for many years. In 2003, he finally
accomplished the dream of owning his own aircraft when he
purchased a Piper Cherokee 180 that he flew out of San
Jose's Reid-Hillview airport.
Charlie was known for his charming,
outgoing and friendly disposition. He frequently enjoyed
get-togethers with friends and family and was usually the
life of the party. Charlie's greatest joy in life was his
family and he took tremendous pride in his five children and
five grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by so many
friends, colleagues and family members.
The family wishes to express its deepest
appreciation to the medical team and social work staff at
Kaiser Permanente Hospital who provided personalized,
professional and compassionate care during Charlie's
prolonged hospital stay.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife,
Francine and his children Kristine, Brad, Brenda, Troy and
Trent, and his step-daughter Heather. Charlie is also
survived by his mother, Florene Gardner of Camarillo, his
brother Gary Nickell of Big Pine, and four nieces. Charlie
was preceded in death by his father, Charles N. Nickell, and
his sister Teresa.
An informal memorial service celebrating
Charlie's life was held at the Scotts Valley Community
Center, 360 Kings Village Road.

truly are. I have three lovely granddaughters, Lauren 4 yrs,
Megan 7 months, and Taylor 5 months. I was blessed to have
met my husband 6 years ago..the man I had dreamed of finding
since I was a young girl. I would love to hear from my
former classmates..we had so many happy times. My kids still
cannot believe we had "sock hops" on Friday nights, rotary
phones, no color t.v., and went to Bob's Big Boy after
school games for fries and cherry cokes..ah, but it was all
good, wasn't it?

Comments: I graduated from Brigham Young University,
majoring in Art, with a minor in English. Two weeks later,
Tom and I got married, and we will celebrate 41 years this
August. I was very busy taking care of 6 children (one
daughter was stillborn), but once the kids were all in
school, I started working part time as an aide in the
elementary school. I worked for 6 years in a school for
developmentally-delayed preschoolers, and loved it. Then I
got hit with severe arthritis in both hips, and had to quit
(Too much modern dance with Miss Pizzo and marching with the
drill team!). In 2004 I had both hips and a knee replaced,
and am doing fine. Tom and I have 12 grandchildren, and they
currently all live within 1 1/2 hours of us, which is
wonderful! I have taken up painting with oils and pastels,
and keep busy with Church activities, also. I would love to
hear from past friends! I sure miss Claudia Hingston Flint,
and was greatly saddened to hear of her passing
away.

Reunion: I did not graduate from CVHS, but attended 5th and
6th grades at Montrose Elementary and 7th, 8th, and 9th at
Clark Junior High with the members of the CVHS Class of '63.
I worked for a time as a ranch hand, fire fighter, and
electrical lineman, before serving in the Army for 30 years.
I flew reconnaissance airplanes and Cobra attack helicopters
on a couple of tours of duty in Vietnam and ended up as a
POW on my second combat tour. I retired from the Army as a
colonel in 1995. I then went back to school and earned a
Ph.D. Since September 11, 2001, I've been back working with
the Army again as a civilian professor. I was thrilled to
recently run across the CVHS alumni page, but was saddened
to learn of the death of Terry Heaton, one of my very best
friends, and of Toby Churchill in the Class of '64. I may
not have graduated from CVHS, but the closest bonds of
friendship in my youth were made during my early years with
the members of the Class of '63 -- especially since I never
spent more than a year in any of my subsequent high
schools.
Comments: I'll see if I can't find a high school era photo
and a recent shot to send along via e-mail, if you're
inclined to include that level of detail for a non-grad.

It is with great sadness I
let you know of the passing on of Larry Seitz. He
was injured in a swimming accident while on
vacation in North Carolina and could not be
revived. He passed away on August 23, 2007. Larrry
has been a very good friend over the years,
starting back at Clark Junior High back in 1957. He
is survived by his daughter Shari, his sisters Lynn
and Donna, and his brother Dale, all CV grads. He
also has two grandchildren. He will be missed by

We now live in Oakhurst and are getting use to the slower

so it's kinda like being on vacation all of the time.
We now have 5 grand children all living is So Cal. Leslie
(Class of '87) is married to Paul Schilling, who is teaching
at C.V. and coaching football. Leslie and Paul have two
boys, Tanner & Grady, and a beautiful little girl by the
name of Brynn. Needless to say, with a coach for a father,
Tanner & Grady are fully engrossed in sports. I'm
waiting to see if Brynn will be a ballerina or a sports star
of some sort. Heather (Class of '90) married Trevor Mezak
(also a C.V. grad) and have twins. Cole & Brooke are
taking after their father, getting into everything and are
already into surfing at the age of 3. Cliff (Class of '97)
is still single and living in La Crescenta.

this year but Jon and I have had a very longtime commitment
that unfortunately we can't change. Hopefully our next

for info about me, here's a brief update: After a successful
career as a television commercial producer I retired to
Solvang, Calif. in the Santa Ynez Valley above Santa
Barbara. I met my husband Jon Stephen, a wonderful man (who
actually grew up in this tiny community) and a highly
regarded grading contractor -- so I can honestly say "he
moves the earth for me!" We live on a small farm complete
with horses, a couple of goats, dogs, cats, and a pond full
of ducks, bass, bluegill and catfish. I self-published a
book (a gift item, not a novel, lest someone confuse me with
having intellect!) called "Three Little Words to Live By"
using my name Karen Langley. My lifelong friend, Denice
(Pruden) Hetherington has become my #1 cheerleader -- as
you'll no doubt recall, something she had some experience
at! It's dedicated to my beloved son Jeff, a Los Angeles
County Firefighter/Paramedic Spec. Ops. who lost his life in
a helicopter incident following a rescue operation in 1993.
Overall and in a nutshell I guess you could say that life is
good and we're so profoundly grateful to have dear friends,
fond memories and aches and pains we can live with, that we
embrace each day with a happy heart. Thank you to Dennis and
Mary LeBlanc for all the time and effort they've put into
pulling us all together. Dennis and Mary -- it's a huge job
and so appreciated. Here's to reconnecting the next go
'round (a coupla years maybe? - Sooner?)... All my best -

Reunion: Experiencing the joy of music in Miss Nute's
classes opened the world of the arts for me. I majored in
music (voice), and was encouraged to pursue a career in
opera. By the time I finished graduate school, however, I
realized traveling the world performing the standard operas,
over and over again, was not for me. With the love of my
life, a very talented flutist, I founded an ensemble of
vocalists and instrumentalists that performed the entire
breadth of the chamber music repertoire. That experience led
me into managing arts organizations in San Francisco, the
Midwest and East. I particularly enjoyed working as director
of the music program for the Pennsylvania Council on the
Arts where I managed a large state-wide granting program.
While there I was able to establish a respected
organizational advancement program that provides technical
assistance to the over 200 music organizations throughout
the state.
Overall, the last almost forty years have been filled with
far too many moves, but a wealth of experiences in music,
theater, visual arts and life. About eight years ago, we
moved back to the Pacific Northwest to its mild summers and
ample rain. This year I reduced my consulting work with
performing arts organizations and have rediscovered the joy
of singing and pursuing new life-long-learning
opportunities. Our latest adventure is starting a business
to produce and market handcrafted designs featuring ceramic,
metal, and glass elements for the home and
garden.

Park are so much fun(even in the rain) so very personal you

Comments: My husband Steve is retired from L.A. Sheriff dept
and we enjoy golfing, and motorcycle riding, geneology and
especially our 6 grandchildren. We have found some of our
lost long high school friends and enjoy visiting and

Reunion: How does one summarize the years....First, I am
looking forward to the reunion, but it just won't be the
same without Claudia (Hingston) Flint. A group of gals - led
by Judi Brawley - (Donna West, Jill Logan, Kathie Olin,
Carol Plumb, Nancy Green, my sister Janice (Wright) Sugerman
(class of 66), Trudy Stenberg, Sharron Stebbings, and a
guest appearance by Carol Wright to name a few - got
together every 5 years to celebrate significant birthdays!
Claudia must have been the heart of our group because our
celebrations stopped after we lost her. So what have I done?
Have been married to Bob for 25 years! Have two great boys
(men). Lived in Santa Cruz and worked at UCSC - where my
husband and I were preceptors (dorm parents) for three years
- quite the experience. Moved to San Francisco and worked in
HIV education at the STOP AIDS Project. Then Judi Brawley
and I made career changes - we graduated from the California
Culinary Academy - Pastry Chefs! I worked in several
restaurants -loved the work - hated the pay and hours. Then
gave it up and moved to Napa; my husband is in the wine
business. Here I worked for Dean and DeLuca - writing on the
website - recipes, menus and articles and also tested all
the recipes for their new cookbook. Did a short stint and a
local winery and am currently just enjoying life before I
re-invent it again. Great to hear from long lost buddy
Charlaine Hall; where are Jeannie Westhead, Coleen Zipkin,
Nancy O'Donnell, Sandy Harris and Joyce Plahn? Current
picture, why? of course I look just the same!
Comments: A picnic - are you kidding? Why after you take
hours to get yourself together to look good in dim light at
night would you want to appear in bright sunlight early the
next day?

Comments: Hello to all of you from the class of 63. Thanks
to this website, I am finding so many of my friends again
after so many years. I recently retired and am doing some
traveling. I found a great piece of property this past
summer near Crater Lake, Oregon and my house is now
finished. I moved in during the middle of June 2006. It
turned out great and I am very much enjoying it. It
overlooks Agency Lake, near Crater Lake. I would love to
hear from all of you and know how you are all doing. If
anyone has any idea how to contact Warren Whisler or Gordon
Peterson, also from '63, please let me know! Just found
Becky (Cross) Billington after losing track of her for
nearly 15 years; it was great to find her again. Best to you

Reunion: Hello from Spokane,WA. Sorry I wasn't able to see
all my old (and I do mean old) classmates. My family and I
moved up here about 20 years ago and we just love it. Having
been a native Californian I never knew there were 4 seasons,
I just thought there were 2, warm and hot. I was retired for
about 2 weeks and was bored. While playing on the internet I
applied for a job and was hired right away. I went from
communications to insurance and will continue to work until
my husband retires in a few years. Hope to see you all at
the next reunion.
