Steve Golsh
Died in Vietnam War
After high school, Steve attended Oregon
State University, and graduated with a B.S. degree in
Entomology.
Steve served with the 101st Airborne in
Vietnam. Known in Vietnam as "Bug Man" by fellow soldiers
and Vietnamese children, he collected specimens of insects
and butterflies, and kept a day-to-day journal of his
experiences there.
Steve was killed March 21, 1970, in the A
Shau Valley, Vietnam, 11 days before his scheduled return to
the states. He was the sole casualty of a night ambush, and
was awarded the bronze star for courageously giving warning
to his fellow soldiers.

Comments: My primary objective in signing in here was trying
to locate Julie Acheson. That was four years ago and she
hasn't signed up yet unfortunately. I haven't seen her since
the late '60s and would love to say hello. I've searched all
the maiden name directories I can locate and have come up
with nothing tangible. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. As for me, I've lived on an island in the
Florida Keys for years, which isn't bad in and of itself.
For the most part I've been extraordinarily lucky and very
happy. I've been married forever to the same person. I have
three fabulous, brilliant, witty, articulate children - and
one grandchild who can be described in exactly the same way.
I have no complaints. It was definitely a walk down memory
lane looking through the pictures and names, all so familiar
seeming, but of another time of my life. I was taken aback
by the number of deaths when looking through the class,
especially the women. How did that happen? It feels to me as
if we're still so very young. I guess it's about that inside
joke (on us) about your mind never aging that we finally
understand after it's too late to tell all those 'old'

update this as my wife has gotten into her 40th reunion and
its been fun. After graduation I trained as a machinist at
Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank then spent 4 years in the Air
Force. I returned to Burbank and attended Glendale City
College majoring in Engineering until a Lockheed RIF in 69.
I changed my major to Education and moved to Utah. I
graduated from BYU in Provo, UT. in 74 teaching Science in
junior and senior high for 5 years. Teaching in Utah is
difficult large class sizes and low pay. I did engineering
on the side building ultra light aircraft and designing
castings for a local foundry. I ended up at Williams
International for the last 23 years designing and making
casting for jet engines. I have recently retired Sept. 09. I
played, coached, & refereed soccer until 3 years ago.
Since then I have returned to my love of off-road
exploration and geology. As soon as Bonnie retires we plan

Comments: My family had just relocated
from Glendale (former high school was Hoover, and friends
connected back to grade school), and I joined CVHS as an
11th grade Junior. The change was a big adjustment and the
work challenge in 11th grade was at an all-time high and
mental immersion for me. My history instructor, Fred
Mabbutt, stands out as the most memorable and outstanding
instructor (including years at graduate school) I ever had.
History had always been my worst subject, and getting an A
in his class was every bit as rewarding to me as getting a
PhD. Bill Thomas also stands out in my mind. Wouldn't it be
great to arrange getting together for a visit with him? I
had previously been enrolled in Doris Ferguson's class, did
especially well on one of her assignments, and was
transferred to Bill's class. What especially stands out in
my mind was his beating his fist on the lectern when
passionately making a point. Another event concerning him
was his driving me home on one occasion and giving me a
paperback of Honore de Balzac. Cecil Gutierrez, my physics
instructor, introduced me to computers when he drove me on
one occasion to L.A. State (now Cal State University, L.A.)
to attend one of his night classes, and to show me the
computer lab. That evening it became completely clear that I
had come face to face with my destiny. The computer field
has been a joy ride for me ever since. To make matters even
more incredible, Cecil lived across the street from Cal
State and let me park in his driveway the full four years I
went there, completing my B.S. in Mathematics in 1968. Girls
were distant from my thoughts until graduate school at
Harvard University where I completed my M.S. in Applied
Mathematics in 1969. While back home in California for the
summer I became smitten with a Big Boy's hamburger waitress,
learned she had moved to Salt Lake City Utah, and decided to
switch to University of Utah so I could continue seeing her.
Ain't love grand! The romance was short-lived, but I got a
Ph.D. in Computer Science out of the deal in 1971, by
programming a computer to play an electronic organ. Back
home, I talked All Saint's Episcopal Church in Pasadena into
letting me hook up a computer to their 90-rank Schlicker
Pipe organ, put on two public concerts, got some TV
coverage, and produced two record albums: not very
profitable financially, but a great deal of fun. I'm now
married to Marcia, and we recently celebrated our 14th
anniversary on August 26, 2009. Marcia should receive an
honorary doctorate in "Kindology." I've always loved the
bumper sticker "Practice Random Acts of Kindness and
Senseless Acts of Beauty." And, after seeing it on a random
car I went in search for one of my own. Visiting Marcia at
her work for lunch, and taking her back to her office
afterward, that saying was scrolling across her computer
screen as her screen saver. I knew it was a sign ... a
scrolling sign to boot ... and my destiny again became
completely clear. The moment I got back to my office, I
called her (4:10 pm, December 7, 1993) and proposed to her
on the spot, and I've been an extraordinarily happy man ever
since. Old CVHS school mates and teachers that come to mind
for me include Ray Haack (Chemistry instructor), Penelope
Greenman (English), William Inhelder (Calculus), Bob
Medders, Art Zygielbaum, Dave Shride (born on the same day
as me, tragically killed in a car accident at age 24), Steve
Caren, Jim Nestel, Carolyn Caldwell, Bob Shigley, Kurt Bareg
(some of these spellings may be wrong), Kriste Mencher (her
married name ... a couple of doors down from us in the
neighborhood), Larry Hobbs, and Rhio Ossola. Finally, I've
just completed a new book on the C++ programming language,
already available from Amazon at

Reunion: Had a great time at the reunion! It was so great to
see so many of our (sister, Janet's, and my) old
neighborhood friends from different classes. Reminisced
about our neighborhood plays in the garage. Guess that's the
reason my sons are in the entertainment business. Scott (29)
is a singer/songwriter in his band, Silvereign, and David
(27) is a writer/director/actor. He has an independent film
that is out there. Soon to be on the independent film
channel. He is working on a new film to be shot in August -
writer and director. Look for him on a Taco Bell commercial.
His line, "Where do we go next?" Had fun at a post reunion
lunch with Carolyn Troester, Chris deRenne, Debi French,
Heidi Jacoby, and Mary Ann Phelps. Gave us a chance to catch
up in greater depth. Of course life has changed since 9/11
and it has been nice to be in touch with old friends through
e-mail. I will continue doing presentations on learning
disabilities and Bob, my husband, is working very hard
heading up a company that works with cities to service loans
for affordable housing, AmeriNational Community Services,
Inc. Hope what we do helps a little. I close hoping you were
not personally touch by the tragic events (We lost one
friend and Bob, a business associate). My heart goes out to

Every once in a while our lives are
touched by someone so special it's hard to put into words
the effect they have had on us.
One of life's 'lights' went out on May 3rd, 2010 with the
passing of George Lowe to pancreatic cancer.
When talking with friends about George, every single one of
them used the same 3 words to describe him: teacher, mentor
and friend - and they talked about the life lessons he
taught them. His basic set of rules: rule #1 - don't sweat
the small stuff; and rule #2 - it's all small
stuff.
He never worried about the things he
couldn't change. He said that if you don't like the
situation you're in, you only have two choices - you can
change the situation or you can change your attitude. For
things that didn't matter, his attitude was "if 70 is
passing, 71 is overkill". But for things that did matter,
specifically like flight safety, he never compromised. And
he always thought of others first, even in his final days,
no matter how bad he himself was feeling.
One of George's life goals was to retire
as a Captain 3 ways, and he accomplished all three. He
retired as a Captain in the US Navy, a Captain with United
Airlines, and as a skilled sailing captain.
George had an incredibly positive
attitude. He loved life and lived it every day. Or, as ourr
sister Fran said, "He lived large". When he was diagnosed
with cancer he really demonstrated this attitude when he
said, "You don't stop living just because you're dying", and
he lived that philosophy to the end. He never gave up,
living for 3? years when he was originally given 3
months.
George is survived by his wife Carole,
sons Rick (40), Scott (39), and Mike (23), and daughter Kris
(20). He is also survived by his mother Betty, sister Fran
(CV '66), and brother Mike (CV '63).
As his son Rick said, "He was a good man
and a great father. He will be missed but never forgotten."
And from son Scott, "I just hope I can live up to his
example".

Sue passed away sadly in 1993. She
brought laughter to so many of us over the years. During our
senior year, Sue was the MVP on our Girl's Football Team
against Lynn MacDonald's side. Though we spent the whole
time laughing, I think we came out victorous on that day.
Sue left two beautiful daughters who must be very grown up
by now. I just wanted to make mention of Sue's passing as
I'm sure many of us have fond memories of her, I know I do.
