Nicholas M. "Nick" Vestuto, 80, a longtime educator and administrator with the Glendale Unified School District, died on March 23, 2007, of complications from heart disease.
Vestuto joined the first teaching staff of Valley View Elementary
School in 1959.
After three years of teaching at Valley View, he took a position as a physical education teacher at the then Clark Junior High School.
From 1963 to 1967, he was vice principal of Monte Vista Elementary School and Clark Junior High School.
Vestuto was also principal at Cerritos, Muir and Keppel elementary schools.
He later served as the board of education's assistant personnel director.
Nick was, first of all, a true professional in the field of education," said Vic Pallos, the district's former public information officer from 1971 to 2004. "I worked through the years with many administrators who were dedicated to their craft and Nick was one of the best."
Pallos worked with Vestuto at the district for 12 years.
"He was very valuable when he moved to the personnel department," Pallos said. "He knew, from his own experience, exactly the kind of qualities to look for in teachers and school administrators. He was a tremendous asset to the district."
Born on Sept. 19, 1926, in Burbank, Vestuto and his family moved to Glendale in 1928. He graduated from Edison Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High School and Hoover High School, and after graduating from Glendale Community College, received his master's degree in education from Cal State Los Angeles.
Vestuto retired in 1984 and moved to Nevada.
Vestuto is survived by his wife, Marjorie Dale Inglish Vestuto; daughters Kristen Howard and Kathleen Vestuto; son Nicholas Jr.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held March 29th at Southern Nevada Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.
